Welcome to WOW! Embossing Powder!

Hello! I’m Christine and I’ve got a fun technique for a Get Well card for you today showing you a simple way to use your Wow Mixed Media Additives (Harlequin). Starting with a simple Salvaged Patina inked background with one stencil (Jamie Rodger’s Pinstripe), then using a second stencil (Jamie Rodger’s Floral Delight) over the top along with some clear texture paste to give us a super easy way to attach our Mixed Media Additives along with a selection of 3 Seth Apter Embossing Powders (Tarnished Teal, Dirti Verdi and Sea of Tranquillity).
Step By Step Tutorial
- Starting with a piece of white card (10 cm x13 cm) ink blend a simple background using Jamie Rodger’s Pinstripe Stencil and some Salvaged Patina Distress Ink along with an ink blending brush.
- Once dry, place this onto your Tonic Studios magnetic crafter’s platform and hold the background and your Floral Delight stencil in place with magnets. Then scrape through some clear texture paste, using a scraper tool to remove any excess if you want.
- Remove the stencil and wash your palette knife, stencil and work surface, then place your wet background onto a piece of scrap paper.
- Open your pot of Mixed Media Additives and take a pinch of the flakes, sprinkle these in random areas across your wet paste, scrunching them between your fingers as you go to break them down into smaller pieces so they don’t obstruct the design.
- Tap off the excess and gently press any larger flakes into the paste being careful not to smudge the design, then select your 3 colours of Wow Embossing Powder.
- I began with Tarnished Teal and I tipped this on in three areas, then flipped the card over quickly onto my scrap paper so the powder only stuck to those 3 initial areas. Decant this powder back into the pot.
- For the second colour I used Dirti Verdi, and did the same as before. Then once I had tapped off the excess I used my final colour, Sea of Tranquillity to cover any remaining clear texture paste.
- There are now 2 options, and I show you both in the video, you can either heat the powder straight away which will get a bubbly more textured effect, or you can allow the texture paste to fully dry…
- Whichever option you’ve decided on, heat your embossing powders to set them and admire your gorgeous mixed media background.
- I wanted a bold sentiment for this card so I’ve taken the Waffle Flower Oversized Get Well Die and I’ve cut the bubble from vellum and the words from white and lime green card (the lime green coordinates perfectly with the lime green in the mixed media additives).
- They looked too plain against our lovely background, so I took a Studio Light Polka Dot stamp, my Wow Ultra Slow Drying Embossing Ink and some Super Fine Clear Powder to add a subtle tone on tone dotty design to the wording.
- I then shadowed the lime green with the white, added it to the vellum bubble and used 3D foam with glue to attach it to the card (the glue helps the foam stick better to the textured background)
- Simply add your panel to a 13.5 x 10.5 cm top folding white card blank.
- And there you have your finished card, in the photos above you’ll also see another variation using a Tim Holtz stencil as I wanted to show how easy it is to turn this slightly more feminine card into a masculine card by simply choosing a different stencil design!
