Welcome to WOW! Embossing Powder!

Hey crafty people, it’s Tasha here, back with another video tutorial for WOW Embossing Powder! Today, let’s explore Fab Foil & Fab Foilers: The Basics
Our Fab Foil is toner activated, so it’s not going to work with a hot foil stamping setup. (For that, we have our new HOT Foil range) But, toner isn’t the only way to use these gorgeous, high-quality foils; they’ll essentially work with anything sticky.
Foiling Basics with WOW’s New Fab Foil Colours
Today’s tutorial is all about using Fab Foil with our range of Fab Foilers. These are toner printed, so with a little heat, you’ll get some gorgeously foiled backgrounds and sentiments.
For the bet experience and to really *see* my tips, troubleshooting and inspiration, the video tutorial really is your best bet! However, I’ve tried to include as much info as possible in this post. (You can get to the video further down this post!)
Getting Started with Fab Foil
I’ve got my Laminator heating up on my desk here, and I like to prep my foiling while it gets to temperature. You could use a Laminator or something like a MINC machine. First things first; our foil comes wrapped around a card shim, which means it has folds in it, but this won’t affect your foiling at all. The Laminator works like an iron, flattening the foil as it rolls through.
Using the New Fab Foil Colours
- Deepest Darkest Crimson: One of our brand new foils. I’ll foiled this onto the distressed stripes background from our Love & Hugs Foiler set. The foilers are wider than our foil, which works for sizes that suit both UK and US markets. You can add two pieces and run them through together if you want the entire panel.
- Metal Marmalade: Another new foil, used with the Happy Birthday panel from my Sweet Sentiments Foiler pack. I like to use a piece of washi tape to secure one end of the foil to the back of the foiler. This helps ensure the foil doesn’t shift during its roll through the Laminator.
- Two Tone Pink & Turquoise: For a two-tone effect, I used pink and turquoise foils on a swirly pattern from the Love & Hugs Set.
- Gold and Peruvian Gold: To show the difference between our regular Gold & Peruvian Gold, I foiled one of the Sweet Sentiments strips panel, I foiled half the panel with each colour. Our regular Gold is super shiny and Peruvian Gold is a matte finish, they’re both different tones as well.
- Running Through the Laminator: Feed your panel and foil into the Laminator without any shim or cover. The Laminator or MINC reheats the toner, which is then pressed to the back of the foil. The combination of heat and pressure bonds the foil permanently to the toner. Let it cool, then peel away the plastic liner to fully reveal that gorgeous foil.

Troubleshooting and Tips
Make sure your machine is really hot; otherwise, the toner won’t heat up enough to bond to the foil properly. If your first panel has lines of toner still visible, let the machine heat up a bit more, then run them back through. You can foil sections several times without affecting the shine, but at a certain point, the shine might dull to a matte finish.
Batch Foiling
When foiling, I like to do a batch of pieces in one go. This way, I make good use of the machine by prepping a bunch of panels.
Prepping and Storing Foiled Sentiments
Trim the foiled sentiments with a mini trimmer for evenly cut pieces. I store them in little pots on my pegboard for easy access.
Making a Card with Foiled Backgrounds
For the card, I used the striped foiled background and added a smaller piece of cardstock embossed with Pastiche. I then layered a stamped, die-cut, and ink-blended butterfly on top, inspired by my dear friend, Jo Herbert. Adding foam adhesive and a sentiment strip below the butterfly completed the card.
Stay Tuned for More
I’ve got lots more foiling leftover, so keep an eye on both the WOW channel and my own to see how I use the other panels.
