Welcome to WOW! Embossing Powder!

Hey crafty people! It’s Tasha, back with another Make It WOW! tutorial. If you’ve not tried WOW! HOT Foil yet, you are seriously missing out! This stuff is awesome — super easy to work with, gives you that luxurious shine, and honestly feels a bit like magic every time you peel it back.
I’m using the Spectrum HOT Foil today, and oh my goodness… it’s absolutely stunning! The way it shifts in the light is mesmerising, and when you pair it with black glossy cardstock, it just hits a whole new level of WOW!
One of the things I love most about the WOW! HOT Foil is how efficient it is — you can fit a full A2 panel horizontally, which means far less waste and so much more sparkle for your stash. Let’s dive in and I’ll show you exactly how I put this gorgeous card together.
How to HOT Foil with WOW! Spectrum Foil

Preparing Your Machine & Materials
- I began by turning on my foiling machine (I use the Spellbinders Glimmer) and allowed it to fully warm up as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
- While it was heating, I gathered my supplies — the Checkerboard Panel Hot Foil Plate from Erin Lee Creative, a piece of WOW! Spectrum HOT Foil, and a 4.25″ x 5.5″ panel of black glossy cardstock.
Building the Foiling Sandwich
- Once my platform was ready, I laid the foil plate directly onto the heated surface and pressed the timer to allow it to preheat.
- I trimmed my foil to size and laid it pretty side down onto the foil plate.
- Next, I placed my cardstock panel on top — again, pretty side down — followed by the spacer and top plate.
- I set the timer to heat the full sandwich. Because this is quite a large foil plate, I like to give it an extra round of heating time to make sure everything’s evenly warmed.
Running It Through the Die-Cutting Machine
- When the timer finished, I carefully lifted the platform from the base, making sure not to disturb the sandwich.
- I ran the entire stack through my Spellbinders Platinum die-cutting machine (following the machine’s foiling instructions).
- Once that was done, I gently peeled back the foil carrier sheet to reveal the most gorgeous foiled pattern!
Don’t Waste That Leftover Foil!
The remaining foil sheet looked so pretty that I couldn’t just toss it aside. Remember — you can reuse your leftover foil with a Solid Foil Plate to create a second, equally stunning background. No waste, just extra shine
✂️ Creating the Card

Building the Background
- I started with an A2 panel of Neenah 80lb cardstock and overlaid it with a piece of pearlescent vellum.
- To avoid visible adhesive, I added a couple of pieces of double-sided tape only in the centre of the panel — this area would later be covered by the foiled piece.
- Adding the vellum gave a lovely pearlescent sheen to the plain white cardstock, keeping it clean and bright while adding subtle interest.
Layering the Foiled Panel
- I trimmed the foiled Checkerboard panel down to 3.25 x 4.5 inches and adhered it onto the vellum layer using my Pear Blossom Press T-Square and its built-in alignment jigs.
- By lining up the A2 panel in the corner cut-out, I was able to position the foiled piece perfectly with a ½-inch border on all sides.
- A little liquid glue gave me wiggle room to ensure everything was lined up neatly before pressing it into place.
Preparing the Sentiment
- For the sentiment, I began with the shadow layer, die-cut from black Sentiment Stock.
- Because the cardstock has a white core, I used a water-based black brush pen to colour all exposed edges, holding the pen from behind the die cut to avoid slipping onto the visible surface.
- I also made sure to colour the inner edges for a seamless finish.
- Next, I took three stacked die cuts of the sentiment (cut from Neenah 80lb) and added a thin bead of glue to adhere them to the black shadow. The contrast was striking against the foiled background.
Adding the Action Wobble
- To bring a touch of movement and whimsy, I reached for a Mini Action Wobble. Each one has strong double-sided adhesive on both sides, so I peeled the release from the solid side first and attached it to the back of my sentiment.
- Because my sentiment wasn’t perfectly balanced, I used a small hack — layering two small pieces of foam tape behind one edge of the die cut.
- I left the release paper on the foam so it wouldn’t stick; it simply balanced the sentiment while allowing the wobble to move freely.
- After that, I removed the release from the other side of the Action Wobble and adhered the sentiment to the centre of the card front, pressing firmly to ensure a strong bond.
Finishing Touches
- For a sub-sentiment, I used a pre-printed reverse sentiment strip from WOW, trimming it to size and colouring the edges with the same black marker to hide the white paper core.
- I added it just below the main sentiment with a bit of foam adhesive for extra dimension.
- To finish the design, I scattered a few clear bubble-like embellishments around the sentiment area, forming a visual triangle.
- The glue dried completely clear, leaving the bubbles looking crisp and polished against the foiled background.
🎥 Watch the Card Assembly
If you’d like to see how I put this card together, I’ve shared a video over on my YouTube channel, HandmadeByTasha. This one focuses on the assembly process rather than the foiling itself — but it’s a great way to see how everything comes together in real time!
I absolutely love how this card came together — the shine, the movement, and that rainbow shimmer from the Spectrum HOT Foil just makes me grin every time I see it! 🥰
If you haven’t tried WOW! HOT Foil yet, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s so easy to work with, gives flawless results, and fits an A2 panel horizontally — meaning less waste and more sparkle for your stash!
