the Joy of Hot Foiling

Welcome to WOW! Embossing Powder!

Hey friends…it’s Michelle back with you sharing a new project featuring hot foiling that is full of shine, thanks to a trio of gorgeous foil! When it comes to Christmas I am definitely a traditional red, green and gold kind of girl! I do love all of the pinks, turquoise, silver and all the other colours, but this trio just is so classic and definitely gets me in the holiday spirit. Let’s get crafting and sharing the Joy of Hot Foiling.

The Joy of Hot Foiling

  1. Emboss a piece of white cardstock with a 3D embossing folder for the background. Trim down to 4″x5.25″ and set aside.

Hot Foiling

  1. Cut 3 pieces of very smooth white cardstock to fit the hot foil plate. I used a glossy photo paper, as the smoother the paper, the better the foiling results will be.
  2. Cut 3 pieces of foil to fit the cardstock. I used Gold Gloss, Red Gloss and Green foils.
  3. Place the foil plate on the machine and allow to heat up thoroughly. I put the plate on as soon as I turn on the machine, so it can heat up at the same time.
  4. Send each piece of foil through with the cardstock, in kind of a foiling sandwich, which consists of hot foil plate face-up on the machine, piece of foil (coloured or shiny side touching the foil plate) and then the paper on top (shiny side down) with the dull or uncoloured side of the foil touching it.
  5. Once each piece has gone through and is cooled down, remove the foil and cut out with the coordinating die. Cut out 2 more unfoiled words from white cardstock for each one…..so 6 in total.

Assembling the Card

  1. Adhere the 2 extra layers to each letter using an adhesive of your choice.
  2. Adhere your 3D embossed background to a red A2 cardbase.
  3. Using a t-ruler find your middle point of the card and place a very, very light small mark with a pencil. This is so that you know where your starting point will be to adhere the letters.
  4. Starting with the green letters, place the O centered on the pencil mark. Using that as your starting point, adhere the other letters evenly on either side and top and bottom of the green Joy. Place an acrylic block on them to help to adhere.
  5. Heat emboss a small piece of cardstock using a red embossing powder and cut out a small bow. Adhere the small red bow using foam tape in the middle of the green O.
  6. Hot foil your small sentiment strips using black foil and cut out.
  7. Add the sentiment strips in between the foiled words and adhere using foam tape.
  8. Add a few clear gems to finish it off.

I love using hot foil….there’s just something about peeling away that piece of foil from the paper that is just so satisfying! Have you seen the range of hot foils that WOW! has? Michelle Burnier

Hello…..my name is Michelle and I’m a Canadian girl living in the beautiful countryside of Switzerland with my Swiss husband and 2 cats. I love all things crafty, shiny and glittery! Besides my love for papercrafting, I also enjoy crocheting and making felt flowers.

My papercrafting journey began about 20 years ago when I walked into my little local stamp and scrapbooking store to make a scrapbook album for my parents’ 20th wedding anniversary. I eventually moved on to cardmaking and haven’t looked back since.
