🔍 HOT Foil vs Fab Foil — What’s the Difference?
While WOW! HOT Foil and WOW! Fab Foil may both create stunning metallic effects, they operate on very different principles — and knowing their strengths helps you choose the right one for each project.
1. How They Bond to the Surface
- HOT Foil is made for use with hot foil plates, foil machines, foiling pens, or foiling plates. HOT Foil bonds with the cardstock (or other substrate) under the correct combination of heat and pressure, using a foil plate or foiling machine to ensure a clean, full transfer
- Fab Foil, on the other hand, is toner-reactive. It adheres to toner, adhesive or certain powders. It works extremely well with Fab Foiler cards (toner-printed designs) and various adhesive surfaces.
2. Tools & Methods
- With HOT Foil, you typically use a foil plate + machine or a Foiling pen that applies precise heat and pressure for clean transfer
- For Fab Foil, you can use a laminator, MINC machine, iron, or even hot foiling machines (in some cases), because it’s about reheating the toner or activating adhesive.
3. Design Approach
- HOT Foil is excellent when you want crisp, defined foiled images, backgrounds or sentiments with reliable transfer on matching plates
- Fab Foil is more forgiving for foiling over adhesive or toner elements. You can “foil on anything sticky.” It’s also great for mixed media techniques, layering, or foiling over embossing powders.
4. Compatibility & Limitations
- A key limitation: HOT Foil will not work with toner-based foiling or Fab Foilers — it requires the foil plate system.
- Conversely, Fab Foil isn’t designed to replace HOT Foil when you want crisp, high-pressure foil transfers via a foil plate; it’s a different tool in your arsenal.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, it’s time to dive into some creative ways you can use your WOW! HOT Foils to add shimmer, shine, and sophistication to your projects. Whether you love clean and simple designs or bold statement pieces, there’s a foiling technique to suit every style!
1. Foiled Sentiments — Big or Small
Make your greetings shine! From bold statement words to delicate script fonts, foiled sentiments add instant luxury to any card. Try pairing metallic foils with soft pastel backgrounds for a high-end look, or go all-out with bright, contrasting colours for extra impact.
2. Background Patterns
Use a cover panel plate or repeat a smaller pattern or image, to create elegant, seamless backgrounds. Subtle foiled details can add beautiful depth without overpowering your main design — perfect for wedding, festive, or celebratory cards
3. Foiled Images & Focal Points
Foil stamped images are the ultimate eye-catcher. Use intricate floral or geometric plates to create professional-quality results that gleam under the light. You can also layer foiled images with watercoloured or ink-blended backgrounds for added texture.
4. Solid Foil Panels
Cover an entire section of cardstock with foil for a bold, mirror-like effect. Once foiled, you can die cut your panels into shapes or sentiments for a sleek, cohesive finish that really stands out.
5. Reverse Foiling
Don’t let any foil go to waste! Use your leftover foil sheets with a Solid Foil Plate to create a stunning reverse image of your design. This technique adds an extra layer of creativity and ensures you get the most from every piece of foil.
6. Double the Shine — Foil on Foil!
For an ultra-luxurious look, try foiling over the top of another foiled layer. For example, foil a solid panel first, then add a detailed image or sentiment on top. The layered shine is absolutely breathtaking!
7. Try Metallic & Glossy Cardstocks
Foiling isn’t just for plain card — experiment with metallic, pearl, or glossy finishes for unique looks. Each surface reacts differently with the foil, giving you endless ways to play and personalise your results.
