Warm & Textured Fall Birthday Card | WOW Embossing Powder

Welcome to WOW! Embossing Powder!

Hi everyone! It’s Rick here on the WOW Embossing Powder Blog, and I’m excited to share a warm and textured fall-inspired birthday card with you today. This is such a cozy project, perfect for embracing those rich, autumn tones. I had so much fun playing with the WOW Quad Citrus Embossing Powders to bring this card to life, and I’m sure you’ll love how the embossing powders add both shine and dimension to your designs. Let’s dive into the details!

Warm & Textured Fall Birthday Card | WOW Embossing Powder

Adding double embossing to your background panel is a sure fire way to make any card stand out. And with today’s post I am going to share with you how I created this Fall themed birthday card.

  1. To start off, I wanted to create a strong, textured background to set the stage for the rest of the card. I grabbed my WOW Superior Cardstock—it’s smooth and takes embossing powder beautifully. Using a   falling leaves embossing folder(from my stash), I applied WOW Ultra Slow Drying Embossing Ink directly to the embossing folder before running the cardstock through my die-cutting machine. Pro Tip: Inking your embossing folder before running it through your die-cutting machine will leave a crisp, inked impression, giving you the perfect surface to apply your embossing powder later!
  2. Next comes the fun part—embossing! I reached for the WOW Quad Citrus Embossing Powder Set and chose the Olive, Rusty, and Tomato shades. I carefully sprinkled the powders over different areas of the inked leaves on my embossed cardstock. After tapping off the excess, I heat set the powders using the WOW Dual Speed Heat Tool. Watching the powder melt and turn glossy is always so satisfying! Pro Tip: If you notice any areas where the embossing powder didn’t stick perfectly, don’t worry! Simply use your WOW Embossing Pen to touch up those areas, reapply the powders, and heat set them again. This ensures full coverage and a flawless finish.
  3. Once the embossing was complete, I wanted to add a bit more depth to the uncovered areas of the background. I used a foam blending tool (from my stash) and applied brown ink (from my stash) to the non-embossed areas. The warm brown shade perfectly complements the fall color palette. After blending, I gently buffed the surface with a dry cloth to remove any excess ink from the embossed areas. To restore the full shine of the embossing, I briefly reheated the embossed leaves with my heat tool, bringing back that beautiful gloss.
  4. Once my background panel was ready, I trimmed it down to 13.9 cm x 9.5 cm to give it a neat, finished look. I then layered it onto a coordinating brown mat from cardstock (from my stash), cut to 14.4 cm x 10 cm.
  5. For the focal elements, I die cut two pumpkins using pumpkin dies (from my stash) from a coordinating patterned paper. I also cut leaves and flowers for additional embellishments. To add some dimension, I created a small hill from another piece of the patterned paper and adhered it using  Foam Tape (from my stash).
  6. To tie the embossed details together across the card, I added more WOW Embossing to the pumpkins and flowers. Using the WOW Embossing Pen, I applied ink to the pumpkin stems and flower centers. For the stems, I used the Olive Embossing Powder from the Quad Citrus set, and for the flower centers, I used a mix of the Rusty and Tomato powders. After heat setting these, the embossing gave them a lovely shine that complemented the background.
  7. Now that all the elements were ready, it was time to assemble the card. I adhered the embossed panel to a top-folding card base cut at 10.5 cm x 27.9 cm and folded in half made from kraft-colored cardstock. I placed the hill on the bottom third of the card front, added the pumpkins on top, and arranged the leaves and flowers around them for a balanced design.
  8. For the sentiment, I die cut two banner shapes (from my stash) and added die-cut letters from more patterned paper. These banners were placed near the top of the card, framing the pumpkins below. To finish things off, I added a few white gel pen highlights to the pumpkins, leaves, and flowers to give them an extra pop of detail.

Final Thoughts

I absolutely love how this fall birthday card turned out! The combination of embossing powders, ink blending, and die cuts gave it a rich, textured look that’s perfect for the season. The WOW Quad Citrus Embossing Powders really stole the show, adding that perfect blend of autumn colors and shine. If you’re a fan of fall crafting, I hope this project inspires you to break out your embossing powders and try some new techniques!
