Hi everyone, it’s Katarina here, and today I’m sharing a winter birthday card combining a blue and teal heat emboss resist background with a white poinsettia, glittered petal edges and gold details.
Poinsettias don’t have to be just for Christmas! By adding a birthday sentiment, I’ve used this flower to create a card for someone celebrating during the winter months. This project brings together several ways to use embossing powders, from stamped backgrounds to die-cut embellishments.
Watch the Full Step-by-Step Tutorial
Join me in the full step-by-step tutorial to see how I created the resist background, die-cut the poinsettia from a heat-embossed panel and added those sparkling edges.
Creating the Card
I started by stamping the background design onto white card and heat embossing it with WOW! Opaque Bright White Embossing Powder. Once the embossing had cooled, I blended Lisa Horton Crafts Cloud 9 inks in Tranquil Waters and Deep Ocean over the panel, building up a mix of blues and teal.
The embossed design resists the ink, allowing the white pattern to stand out against the colour. I gently wiped away any excess ink from the embossed areas, then added water droplets and splatters using the Cloud 9 white pigment reinker for a snowy effect.
I cut the background into five vertical strips and mounted each one onto gold mirror card. Keeping the strips in their original order allows the stamped design to continue across the panel. I arranged them on a white panel, leaving gaps between each strip, then added a larger gold mirror mat and adhered everything to the card base.
For the poinsettia, I heat embossed a separate piece of card with WOW! Opaque Bright White Embossing Powder before die-cutting the flower layers. Embossing the card first gives the petals a coated finish, and the die-cut details add texture to the surface.
I applied a thin bead of glue around the petal edges and sprinkled over WOW! Sparkles Premium Glitter in Your Carriage Awaits. Once dry, I layered the poinsettia and added a white pearl to the centre.
The twig die-cuts were heat embossed with WOW! Polished Gold Embossing Powder and tucked around the flower alongside white leaves. I used the same powder for the “birthday wishes” sentiment, tying the gold details together.
To finish, I added a few blue rhinestones across the card for an extra touch of sparkle.
Final Thoughts
I love how the white poinsettia stands out against the blue and teal background. The glittered petal edges catch the light, while the gold twigs and narrow mats give the design a coordinated finish.
This card shows how you can use embossing powders in several ways within one project. Try changing the background colours or sentiment to make the design your own!
Thank you so much for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy the tutorial.
