Hi crafty friends, it’s Katarina here! Today I’m excited to share a creative way to combine WOW! Embossing Powders with the WOW! Changers Lightening Kit to build layered effects across background, leaves, flowers, and frames while stretching your supplies and getting lots of unique finishes from just a few powders.
The Changers Lightening Kit includes three transformative additives Sheen, Glisten, and Texture that let you tweak any base embossing powder to make lighter tones, add shimmer, sparkly brightness, or dimensional texture. Using these in combination with your favourite powders means you can build coordinating shades without buying multiple versions of the same colour.
In this project I’ve used Berryburst paired with Sheen for a graduated background, Castleton with Texture for dimensional leaves, and Polished Gold with both Sheen and Glisten for floral layers and shining frames. The result is a rich, cohesive card full of subtle variation and gleaming contrast.
A closer look at what’s happening in this card – watch the video above for the complete tutorial.
Step‑by‑Step Overview
1. Prepare Your Background
To start the background, heat emboss Berryburst as it is in patches across your panel. Next, mix a small amount of Sheen into Berryburst and add this mixture in patches over the panel, blending slightly where it meets the original powder. Then mix in more Sheen and apply this across the entire panel to build a smooth gradient of progressively lighter shades. Once your layering is complete, pass the panel through a 3D embossing folder to add texture and depth. The different Berryburst shades with Sheen will catch the light beautifully across the raised areas.
2. Build Your Card Shape
Use an arch shaped nesting die set to cut the main background panel and coordinating frames. For the narrower frame, mix Polish Gold with a touch of Glisten to lift the warmth and add a sparkling edge around your focal arch.
3. Create Embossed Leaves
For some leaf elements, heat emboss with Castleton as it is for deep, rich green. For additional leaves, mix Castleton with Texture to give a tactile, dimensional finish that stands out from the flat finish.
4. Emboss the Flowers
Heat emboss some floral layers with Polish Gold alone for classic metallic shine. For layered blossoms, mix Polish Gold with Sheen to soften the gold and add a pearlescent shimmer. Layer these embossed elements to add focal interest and visual contrast against the textured background.
Finishing Touches
Once all the heat embossed and die cut elements are ready, arrange them on your card front, balancing textures, shimmer, and shine for a harmonious composition. The multi effect finishes from the Changers kit mean each element has its own character, yet they all pull together beautifully.
