Welcome to WOW! Embossing Powder!

Hey crafty people! It’s Tasha here — I’m so excited to share a fun technique that really elevates small die cut pieces. In this post I’ll show you how I used powders from the Earthly Marvels Collection to colour and add shine to die cuts for a makeup-themed card. Whether you’re new to heat embossing or you’re looking for a fresh way to use your stash, this method gives beautifully consistent colour and metallic finishes to even the fiddliest pieces!
In the tutorial I demonstrate two main approaches to colouring die cuts with embossing powder: embossing first and then die cutting, and die cutting first then embossing. I explain why I favour embossing before cutting for tiny or delicate shapes (it prevents heat-warping), and when embossing after cutting can still be the better option.
Step-by-step: Adding Colour and Shine with Embossing Powders
- I embossed pieces of WOW Superior Smooth cardstock with each of the 6 colours from our Earthly Marvels Collection. (You can choose any of your favourite powders, either from your stash or if shopping for new!)
- Then I die cut all of the pieces that I’d need for my design out of these embossed panels, matte & glossy black cardstock and coloured vellum. To keep my pieces organised, I like to add them all to a little tray as I go.
- For the mirrors in each compact, I cut from white cardstock and embossed in 2x layers of Polished Silver. (Just press the die cut directly on your ink pad and cover in powder, heat set, leave it to cool for a few seconds and repeat!)
- I glued together all of my layered die cuts, with liquid glue. For some added detail, I added some white highlights with a gel pen.
- I stamped my sentiment in Versafine Onyx Black ink, covered in Clear Gloss embossing powder and heat set. Before die cutting, and adding some extra die cuts from scrap paper for dimension.
- For a simple background, I added a black die cut frame to an a2 panel of Neenah 80lb.
- I assembled my card design, using a mixture of liquid & foam adhesive.
- I embellished the design with some chunky pink hearts and an assortment of little gems.
Colour and Add Shine With WOW! Embossing Powders
That’s the card — I hope you loved seeing how useful colouring die cuts with embossing powder can be for adding shine and dimension to tiny elements. If you try this technique, please share your makes and tag us on social so we can see them — I absolutely love seeing how you adapt these ideas. Thank you for spending this time crafting with me, and I’ll see you in the next tutorial. Stay crafty!
