Easy Foiling Without a Hot Foil Machine

Welcome to WOW! Embossing Powder!

Hey WOW! friends…..today I am sharing an easy way to foil if you don’t have a hot foil machine. Did you know that in addition to WOW’s amazing and wide range of embossing powders, they also carry two different types of foil? My project features 4 of the gorgeous Fab Foils from WOW! Let’s dive in and I will demonstrate how I created this colourful butterfly. I did this by doing some Foiling Without a Hot Foil Machine.

Foiling Without a Hot Foil Machine

  1. Create your background using a peacock BetterPress Plate and some gold ink. Press the image on one end of the paper. Without removing the plate nor the cardstock, ink up the plate again. Rotate the plastic plate with the cardstock 180 degrees. This ensures that the earlier pressed image is facing the opposite direction. Ink again using the same gold ink and press. Trim down your background 1/4″ all around.
  2. Do a second BetterPress impression for your sentiment using black ink over the gold feathers. In case you were wondering, doing a second image over your earlier pressed image works beautifully!
  3. We are going to be foiling using a Minc machine or if you have one, a laminator. Turn on your chosen machine to allow ample time for it to heat up fully.
  4. Cut a piece of the Fab Foilers Soild Panels, big enough for each of the dies for the butterfly. Cut a piece of each colour of Fab Foil – Sepia Satin, Aqua Satin and Fuschia Satin big enough to cover each panel and run through your pre-heated machine.
  5. Cut out the detailed top layer of the butterfly from black cardstock.
  6. Foil a full piece of the solid panels for the bottom of the butterfly using Glitter Gold. Cut out the solid bottom layer of the butterfly and layer and adhere the detailed piece over top.
  7. Put each of the layers together of the foiled pieces for the peacock like feathers. Adhere to the large detailed butterfly layer.
  8. If you do not have a laminator or a Minc machine, you can also do this using a tacky when dry gel medium. Apply an even thin layer of the medium on a piece of cardstock and allow it to dry. Apply your foil when it is fully dry but tacky, as the name states. This paste you normally see used for stencils, but you can use it all the same without a stencil.
  9. Adhere your pressed background to your A2 cardbase. Adhere your butterfly to your background on an angle and apply a few flat back gems around the Peacock Butterfly.

Just because you don’t have a hot foil machine doesn’t mean you can’t achieve beautiful foiled results! WOW! has lots of beautiful foils to chose from, whether you use a hot foil machine or toner foiling. It really is easy to foil without a hot foil machine…..you may just have a laminator laying around that doesn’t get much use. Don’t be limited to your creativity just because you don’t have all of the fancy tools. Thank you so much for joining me today and I hope I have helped to inspire you. I wish you all a crafty and colourful day! Until next time 🙂

Hello…..my name is Michelle and I’m a Canadian girl living in the beautiful countryside of Switzerland with my Swiss husband and 2 cats. I love all things crafty, shiny and glittery! Besides my love for papercrafting, I also enjoy crocheting and making felt flowers.

My papercrafting journey began about 20 years ago when I walked into my little local stamp and scrapbooking store to make a scrapbook album for my parents’ 20th wedding anniversary. I eventually moved on to cardmaking and haven’t looked back since.
