Techniques to Try with Mixed Media Additives
Our Mixed Media Additives are versatile and can be used in lots of different ways. Below you’ll find each of the techniques shown in the video, along with tips and project links to help you explore further.
1. Mix with Embossing Paste for Texture
Apply embossing paste to card or canvas, then sprinkle Dragon Scales, Harlequin, or Silver Glass over the surface. You can pat them down for a smoother look or leave them standing proud for extra dimension. Try mixing the additives into the paste before applying for a Terrazzo-style effect.
2. Embed into Heat Embossing Layers
Cover your cardstock with a thick embossing powder, such as Black Ultra High, and melt it from below. Add 2-3 layers to build up a thick base. While the surface is still warm and molten, sprinkle on some Silver Glass and heat from below again so the pieces sink in without blowing away. The result is a smooth glossy layer with shimmering flecks popping through.
3. Create Your Own Mixes
Mix Silver Glass or flakes with embossing powders like Vegas Gold to create a custom blend. Always mix in WOW! jars using a metal spoon to avoid static — never plastic! These unique mixes melt into layers with a distinctive finish that you can’t buy ready-made
4. Sprinkle Over Sparkles for Added Interest
Use the Mixed Media Brush to apply embossing ink, then cover with a Sparkle powder such as Pastiche. Before the layer fully melts, sprinkle Dragon Scales or Harlequin flakes over the top and finish heating from below. This adds tactile texture with extra glittery shine.
5. Stick with Double-Sided Adhesive
Heat-safe double-sided tape or sheets are perfect for MMA’s. Cover strips of adhesive with Dragon Scales, Silver Glass, or Harlequin, pressing them firmly into place. You can crush the flakes for finer dust or combine them with embossing powders to fill in gaps. These strips are great as borders, accents, or die-cut shapes.
6. Use with Liquid Adhesives
Apply small dots of glue where you want accents, then add MMA’s on top. This method is ideal for embellishment-style details, mimicking gems, or adding scatterings of texture across a background.
7. Shaker Elements & Beyond
Mixed Media Additives also shine inside shaker windows. Use them alone for bold texture, or mix with sequins and beads for variety. They move beautifully and catch the light in ways regular shaker fillers can’t match.
