rainbow ink-blending with Colour-trap heat embossing

Rainbow ink blended card

I’m not sure if there’s an official name for this technique, but I’m calling it colour-trap heat embossing… because that’s kind of what it does! I used clear embossing powder over pastel ink-blending, to trap the colour underneath, before adding more saturated colours over the top – check out the YouTube video below to see the process in action!

What You’ll Need

  • White cardstock
  • Clear embossing powder
  • Heat embossing tool
  • Embossing ink
  • A rainbow of ink pads, in lighter and darker shades
  • Ink blending brushes or foams
  • (Ideal but not necesary) paper trimmer/guillotine
  • Die-cutting machine and a rectangle die
  • A stencil, or a background stamp with solid images
  • A stamp set with a sentiment
  • Black ink
  • Foam tape
  • Clear confetti

Instructions: colour-trap heat embossed card

  • Ink blend an A2 card panel with rainbow colours in pastel shades.
  • Ink up a background stamp with embossing ink, and stamp over the ink blending (alternatively, apply the embossing ink through a stencil).
  • Add clear embossing powder over the ink and heat set.
  • Add another layer of ink blending over the top, using darker shades of each colour.
  • Use a clean microfibre cloth or similar to gently wipe the darker ink off the top of the heat embossing, which will have resisted the colour, and reveal the lighter shade trapped underneath.
  • Die cut a rectangle from white card or acetate, and stamp a sentiment. Add to the card panel.
  • Trim the card panel to 4 x 5.25″ and add to an A2 card base with foam tape.
  • To finish, add some clear confetti.

Hey! I’m Jayne, or you may know me as Card Days’ Night!

I live in Chester, UK, with my husband and two young daughters, and I work as a travel lawyer – so life is pretty full on! When I’m not busy with work, kids and family life, I love nothing more than spending time in my craft room. Cardmaking is my passion but I also love planning, memory keeping and sewing.

I love to explore new places, but I’m always happiest when I’m home!
