EASY WATERCOLOUR CARDS WITH WOW HOT FOIL

I know, I know – hot foil can be intimidating, and so can watercolour, and I’m doing them both in one video! I promise you though, it’s a lot easier than it looks. In today’s video, I’ve got three cards to share with you that I’ve created with Wow Hot Foil (you can view the collection here), and coloured with three different (easy!) watercolouring techniques.

Below are brief instructions on how to use Wow Hot foil, but for all the card details, please do join me over on YouTube!

What You’ll Need

  • Watercolour paper (hot pressed is best)
  • Foiling machine (I use the Spellbinders Glimmer machine)
  • Some hot foil (Wow have an amazing range)
  • A hot foil plate
  • Something to watercolour with – you could use watercolour paints, ink cubes, watercolour markers, pencils or crayons – whatever you have to hand!
  • A paintbrush and some water
  • A piece of acetate or packaging
  • Some masking tape or other low tack tape

Instructions: Watercolour hot foil

To create a foiled panel:

  • Allow your foiling machine to heat up, add your foil plate and again allow this to heat up as per the instructions on your machine.
  • Cut a section of hot foil big enough to cover the foil plate (did you know that Wow foils are tall enough to cover A2 plates?)
  • Place your foil pretty side down onto the foil plate.
  • Add your cardstock on top of the foil.
  • Place your shim and acrylic spacer over the top of the cardstock – I added an extra sheet of cardstock as an additional shim which helped get good foiling on the watercolour card.
  • Remove the platform from your foiling machine and run through your die cutting machine.
  • Peel back the foil from your card, and voila! Beautiful foiled cards!

Card one (peonies):

  • Pick up some clean water with your paintbrush and apply to the area (flower head) that you wish to paint.
  • Using a pale pink, yellow and blue, smudge some of each colour (I used ink cubes from Concord and 9th) onto a slick surface (I use a glass craft mat), then pick up the colour with your wet paintbrush.
  • Paint about a third of the flower in pink, then do the same with yellow and blue inks, overlapping between each colour to create a pastel rainbow. Repeat for all the flowers.
  • For the leaves, smush a green ink pad onto a slick surface and using the same technique, paint the leaves.

Card two (gummy bears):

  • Mask off the edge of the panel using low-tack tape.
  • Using a wide paintbrush, paint the panel all over with clean water.
  • Pick up some of the smooshed pink ink with the wide paintbrush, and paint horizontally across the panel from the top, to about half way down. Repeat with the yellow, then the blue, each time overlapping with the previous colour to create a rainbow.
  • Remove the masking tape and allow to dry.

Card three (gummy bears)

  • This time, smoosh some of the ink on to an piece of acetate or clear packaging.
  • Spray with water, to allow the colours to move around.
  • Flip the acetate over and apply to the card panel – repeat as many times as you like to create the coverage you’re happy with.

    Jayne Vaughan

Hey! I’m Jayne, or you may know me as Card Days’ Night!

I live in Chester, UK, with my husband and two young daughters, and I work as a travel lawyer – so life is pretty full on! When I’m not busy with work, kids and family life, I love nothing more than spending time in my craft room. Cardmaking is my passion but I also love planning, memory keeping and sewing.

I love to explore new places, but I’m always happiest when I’m home!
