Welcome to WOW! Embossing Powder!

Today I’m sharing a vintage-inspired mixed media canvas using WOW embossing powders, filled with layered textures, delicate details and soft shimmering effects. For this project, I wanted to create a magical and slightly mysterious design by combining rich teal and golden tones with dimensional embellishments and embossed accents.
One of my favorite parts of this project was experimenting with different WOW embossing powders to highlight decorative elements and create beautiful contrast between soft sparkle and vintage texture. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the full creative process — from preparing the base to building the final layered design.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Learn how to create a magical and slightly mysterious design with beautiful shine.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 — Create the round base and prepare the background
To begin, I created a round base for the canvas using sturdy cardboard covered with patterned paper in deep teal and vintage brown shades.
To add more depth and an aged mixed media effect, I applied texture through a stencil using texture paste. Once dry, I softly highlighted some of the raised areas with metallic waxes and splatters to enhance the vintage feel of the background.
The combination of distressed textures and elegant patterns creates the perfect base for the layered design.
Step 2 — Emboss decorative elements with WOW embossing powders
Next, I moved on to preparing all the decorative elements using WOW embossing powders.
For this project I used:
- Speckled Sky embossing powder
- Buttercup Blossom embossing powder
I heat embossed different die-cut and chipboard elements, including: leaves, lanterns, paper lace, delicate embellishments.
The soft blue tones of Speckled Sky add a frosty, dreamy effect, while Buttercup Blossom introduces warm golden highlights that beautifully balance the design.
To achieve a more dimensional finish, I applied embossing ink with a detail tool and layered the powders in some areas for extra texture and shine.
Step 3 — Build the layered design
Once all the elements were ready, I started building the central design.
I layered:
- paper cut-outs
- embossed chipboard elements
- flowers
- clocks and books
- decorative leaves and branches
I always begin with the largest focal elements and gradually add smaller details to create balance and movement throughout the design. To make the design more dynamic, I used foam adhesive between layers, creating depth and dimension.
The embossed lanterns and foliage help guide the eye through the entire project and add magical glowing accents to the canvas.
Step 4 — Add finishing details
For the final touches, I added: white splatters, microbeads, sequins, soft glitter accents with Earth Sparckle.
These details help connect all the layers together and give the project a finished mixed media look with elegant sparkle.
As a result, I created a richly layered mixed media canvas using WOW embossing powders, full of texture, shimmer and vintage details. I love how the soft blue and golden embossed elements contrast against the darker background and bring the entire design to life.
WOW embossing powders are perfect for adding unique finishes and transforming simple embellishments into eye-catching focal elements. I hope this project inspires you to experiment with texture, layering and embossing in your own mixed media creations.

I’m Lidiia, and I’m Ukrainian! I live in the charming and historic city of Lviv, Ukraine. I have two little daughters and a wonderful husband who is my rock, my support, and my best friend in everything.I also have a deep love for home aesthetics, so I always enjoy decorating my apartment with stylish and beautiful details.
But my biggest passion is scrapbooking—I’ve been doing it for over 8 years! I absolutely love fussy cutting elements from collections by hand (it’s a true passion of mine!), adding sparkle to every project with embossing powders, and creating handmade fabric flowers for all my works. That’s a little story about me.
