Welcome to WOW! Embossing Powder!

Hey crafty friends….it’s Michelle back with a new and fabulous colour combination, using WOW! embossing powders. Now today’s colour combination is a bit different, as it is made up 2 shades of the same colour and a wee pop of brightness. Today’s card also has a bit of meaning for me and is the reason I used this beautiful palette of reds. When I realized that today was my bi-weekly day to post, I knew excatly what I wanted to do. Continue reading for the little story behind my card today and how I’m sending birthday love up above.
So today happens to be my fathers birthday, however he is no longer with us, as he passed away almost 3 years ago. Red was his favourite colour and he always loved hot air balloons. Before we moved overseas, there was annual hot air balloon festival in the city we lived in and he always got in the van with my mom and they drove almost an hour away, bright and early to come with us to see the balloons first thing in the morning, as they were getting all blown up and ready to go up in the air. So I felt that this was only fitting and the perfect card for him today, on his special day. Continue reading to find out it all came together.
Sending Birthday Love
- Using a stamp positioner, stamp the hot air balloon image on white cardstock using embossing ink and heat set with Primary Ebony Super Fine powder. Be sure to leave the stamp in the positioner, as it will be heat embossed a second time.
Colouring the Balloon
- As the ballon stamp only consists of the lines, I wasn’t able to just stamp the entire inside of the balloon, so I used my embossing pen for this. It was also perfect, as I wanted to use 2 different powders. I did 1 section at a time, alternating them and added the powder to the outer sections and the middle first and then heat set them. I made sure the heat tool was nice and hot and heated it from below the cardstock, to try and minimize too mich heat on the black embossing, as I didn’t want to melt it too much. On the first 3 sections I added Primary Apple Red and then the remaining 2, I added Red Glitz. I also did the small part of the balloon at the bottom, alternating the 2 powders again. All of this was done 2x, to get a smooth even coverage, as I was using the pen and I didn’t want it streaky. The basket was heat embossed using Sunliit Gleam.
- My embossing pen was getting a bit dry as I was colouring in the balloon, so I took the Mixed Media Embossing Brush Tool and added some of the ink to a clear acrylic block and picked up the ink as I was colouring in the balloon. This worked brilliantly!
- After all of the balloon was heat embossed, I placed it back in the stamp positioner and heat embossed the image a second time using the Ebony Super Fine embossing powder. I did this 2 second time, as some of the lines weren’t as crisp and well defined as originally due to all the heat embossing. A stamp positioner comes in handy for this, as you can ensure the image is stamped again in the exact same spot as the first time. Be sure to put your cardstock right up against the edge of the positioner, to avoid any double stamping of the image.
Assembling the Card
- The clouds were heat embossed using Ebony Regular powder and they were diecut as well as the balloon. For the background I ink blended a piece of smooth white cardstock, to mimic the sky, getting lighter towards the bottom of the cardstock and then this was trimmed down to 3.75×5″.
- The sentiment was added from the Happiest Day Stamp Set from WOW! as well as the small heart below the sentiment, which was coloured in using a red alcohol marker. I love the delicate script of the sentiments in this set!
- The clouds and the balloon were added to the ink blended background using liquid adhesive and foam tape, for the dimension. And then it was added to my top folding A2 cardbase.
I really love how this came together! I will admit that after the first round of heat embossing the inside of the balloons, I wasn’t sure as it was streaky, but after the second round it was nice and even. I did need to fill in small little holes that were missing colour,, but the pen is perfect for that, as you can get right in the small little spots.
